Life Lesson #21 – Stop Bullying!

It was not the first day of school, but it was Joel’s first day. His family had just moved to town from Ohio, and he was a little nervous because he didn’t know anyone. At lunch time, he decided he would make some new friends by sitting at the end of a table where three other guys seemed to be friends with each other. “Hi, I’m Joel,” he said. That’s when one of the other boys said, “Whatever,” and the three of them got up and left Joel there by himself. “Well, here we go again,” thought Joel. You see, that kind of thing had happened before, but it still hurt—a lot. This time would be different, though.

Rachel was eating lunch with her friends, and saw what had happened. She picked up her tray and went over to sit with Joel, who was still there by himself. “Hi, I’m Rachel,” she said. “I saw what happened and I’m sorry those guys were treating you that way.”

“That’s okay,” said Joel, but Rachel knew by the look in his eyes that it really wasn’t okay, so they talked for a few minutes. Then Rachel said, “Come on, Joel, grab your tray and follow me,” as she led him to the other table where she had been sitting. “Hey everybody, this is Joel. He’s from Ohio and he’s new here,” she told her friends. And with Rachel’s HELP, very soon the boy who had no friends now had seven. Rachel was like that, you know. Not only was she a HERO, she was always looking for ways to teach others to be HEROES, too. Now it was Joel’s turn to learn, and then teach, just like Rachel.
