Life Lesson #33 – Don’t Limit Your Options.

Rashad and two of his friends were playing some basketball after school one day when one of the boys pulled three heavy-duty permanent markers out of his backpack. “Let’s go tag that wall over there,” he said. Then the other boy said, “Cool!” But Rashad said, “No, man, that’s wrong!”

“Yeah, right, in your opinion, it might be wrong,” said the boy. Rashad said, “Look at it like this, dude. If that were your house, and someone marked it all up, how would you feel— especially if you were the one who had to clean it off?!” The other boy said, “Well it’s not my house, and I don’t have to clean it off.” That’s when Rashad answered, “But you will have to clean it off if you get caught, and you’ll be in a lot more trouble, too. And if you don’t get caught, then the school custodians will have to clean it off. Why would you want to cause extra work for them? Why don’t you try HELPING somebody instead?”

And you know, just at that moment, one of the cafeteria ladies was carrying some trash to the dumpster when she tripped, and the trash went everywhere. Rashad didn’t even stop to think about it. He was over there instantly HELPING her to pick it up. His two friends watched, and it made a big impression on at least one of them. He saw a great example that day of a real HERO in action! And that day, he started making some changes in the way he thought about things.
