Life Lesson #19 – Set Goals.

Jasmine and her friend were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Jasmine said, “I’m either going to be a cardiologist or a pediatrician. I’m not sure which right now, but I do know I’m going to college at Johns Hopkins University.” Well, about that time, two other girls started teasing her, and saying things like, “You don’t know what you’re going to be when you grow up—what do you think you are, some kind of psychic or something!? You’re just a kid!”

“Alright, that’s enough,” said Mrs. Loftin, the counselor, who just happened to be walking by. “I think it’s wonderful that Jasmine has goals for herself, because if she has goals for her own future, she will naturally work harder in school and in other areas of her life to have a better future. AND, she will enjoy working harder because she knows there is a good reason for it.” Mrs. Loftin went on to say to the girls, “Even if Jasmine changes her mind about what she wants to be, at least she will always have something in life to prepare for, which makes her a HERO to her own future self!” Jasmine smiled, and one of the girls who was teasing Jasmine said, “You mean I could be like a scientist or something?”

“Absolutely,” said Mrs. Loftin! Why don’t you come by my office tomorrow and we’ll talk about it.” And you know what, that’s exactly what she did. Not only did she apologize to Jasmine, but she started right then becoming a HERO for her own future self as well!
