Life Lesson #66 – Credibility is valuable.
Dane lived only three blocks from the school, so every day he just walked home, and he really enjoyed doing that. One day, when he was almost half-way there, two boys came out from behind a tree and threw a water balloon at him. Then the boys started laughing and calling Dane a lot of bad names. Dane finally made it all the way home, and he told his mom what had happened. Then he got busy taking out the trash.
When Dane’s father got home, they told him what happened. Well, Dane’s father didn’t let it rest for another minute. He called the two boys’ parents and said, “We need to have a meeting—right now.” And so that’s what they did. Dane’s mom got out an apple pie she had bought at the store just that afternoon, and the other parents, along with their sons, came to Dane’s house. But when Dane’s father explained to the other parents what their sons had done, they just laughed and said, “Oh come on—they’re just being kids, doing what kids do!” Dane’s father said, “Yes, you’re right, until they are taught better.” He said, “It’s like… eating with a fork. Isn’t it true that babies just eat with their hands? And isn’t it true that they will pick up just about anything and put it in their mouths until they are taught better? And isn’t it true that your sons haven’t been taught about not hurting others?” Well, the other parents didn’t really have an answer for that, so they just quietly left and went home. But you know what? Those two boys never hurt Dane or anyone else again. Their parents taught them not to hurt others, but instead, to be HEROES who HELP.
