Life Lesson #66 – Credibility is valuable.

Deshan was riding to school on the bus one morning, looking forward to the day, as usual. But when the bus stopped at the school and began unloading, Deshan’s friend (who sometimes really wasn’t his friend) started trying to get Deshan to do something that was a really bad idea. The boy was daring Deshan to jump off the bus from the top step. Deshan said no, and that it was against the rules. That’s when the boy started calling Deshan “Chicken,” and telling some of their other friends that Deshan was afraid. He said, “Deshan, man, you need to be brave, and do brave things,” knowing all along that if Deshan did indeed do what he suggested, he would be in a lot of trouble. What he didn’t stop to think about though, is that Deshan might get hurt in the process. Deshan said, “That’s not being brave, dude, that’s being dumb.”

And right then, Deshan had the opportunity to show what he was really made of. As he got to the steps, he stopped the line behind him, and let Renee get out of the front seat where she had been sitting. Renee wore a leg brace, so she usually stayed on the bus until last so Mr. Barker, the driver could HELP her. This was the day, however, that Deshan decided he would start HELPING her, and that’s exactly what he did. After Deshan and Renee were off the bus, Mr. Barker stopped the boy who had been daring Deshan. He said, “If you want to see brave, just look at Deshan. He knows full well that you shallow minded boys will probably tease him for HELPING Renee like that, but he did it anyway. You need to be more like him because, there, my friend, goes someone who is becoming a real HERO!”
