Life Lesson #66 – Credibility is valuable.

Grace and Hannah are twin sisters. Both are in the 5th grade, and both are in Mrs. Patillo’s class. One day after lunch, the twins were talking quietly just outside the library. They were very worried about their older brother, David, who had pneumonia. David was having a very hard time breathing, and while the girls knew they couldn’t really do anything to HELP, they were still concerned.

What they did not know was that the girl who sits behind them in class was standing just around the corner, listening carefully to every word. She was like that, always minding other people’s business—she would even look through other people’s notebooks, if she thought nobody was watching.

Well, this time, somebody was watching— Mrs. Patillo. She saw the whole thing, and sternly called her name. The girl jumped and turned around so fast that she dropped a book she was carrying. Then she started to lie about what she was doing. That’s when Mrs. Patillo interrupted and told the girl that eaves dropping on a private conversation is a terribly hurtful thing to do. The girl thought, “No it is not,” but she didn’t say it out loud. She was already in enough trouble. Mrs. Patillo said, “If you were having a private conversation with someone, and then you found out that another person was carefully listening to every word, would it hurt your feelings?” The girl thought, “Well, yeah, I guess it would.” The teacher then asked the same question about somebody sneaking around and looking through her stuff.

Now the girl started to understand. She had always heard about how hurting is the opposite of HELPING and people who HELP are called HEROES. And while she still had to do some thinking about it, soon she found herself looking for ways to HELP others instead of hurting them. She found herself becoming a HERO, instead.
