Life Lesson #6 – Don’t Risk Your Life For a Thrill.
Four hundred years ago, America looked very different. No roads or stores. No cities, cars, or airplanes. There were people living here then, and they were quite content with the way they lived. One of those people from long ago was a beautiful little girl with a name that meant “Playful One.” She was called Pocahontas. And many people today call her a HERO.
Pocahontas was very curious about all the strangers coming to America from across the ocean. She watched from the woods as they began to make homes for themselves. One day, she ran out from her hiding place to meet the strangers. Of course, she did not speak their language, and they could not understand her. But one of the leaders in the group, Captain John Smith, became her friend and taught her some English words. And she taught him some Indian words. She loved visiting with these new people and playing with their children. But some of the other Indians were afraid of them and wanted them to leave. They even tried to kill John Smith one day. But Pocahontas was a girl of integrity, and she knew that was wrong! She risked her own life to save his.
Not long after that, the village of Jamestown had a terrible fire. The new people lost nearly everything, including their food. Pocahontas was determined to do what was right. She convinced the people of her tribe to take food to the people and HELP them live through this terrible thing that had happened to them. We will never forget that special little girl who wanted the English people and the Indians to be friends forever. She was truly a HERO.
